Sunlight: The Forgotten Lifeline

Circadian comes from the Latin words "circa" (around) and "diem" (day), meaning

"about a day."

Your body's built-in rhythm, is synchronized with the sun.

But what happens when we disconnect from this natural cycle?

Imagine this...

You're locked inside all day, every day.

The only way outside is if someone unlocks the door and decides to take you.

Now, imagine this isn't prison—it's a care facility.

Inmates in U.S. maximum-security prisons are guaranteed at least 2 hours of outdoor time daily.

In this short video, inmates describe their yard time as the highlight of their day.

When asked how they'd feel if it were cut to one hour, their response?

 =

That would be torture.
I think that's going to build more anger.

A prison guard even called it "potentially disastrous."

And yet, residents, carers, administrators, and entire care teams in care facilities/communities around the world,

aren't getting outside at all.

If prisoners consider reduced outdoor time a form of suffering, what does that say about how we treat people in care?

The Science is Clear:

Outdoor light is up to 333 times brighter than indoor light.

Lux is the unit of measurement for light intensity,

indicating how much light illuminates a surface.

  • 100,000 lux = Bright sunlight

  • 10,000 lux = Overcast daylight

  • 300–500 lux = Typical indoor lighting

More lux = Better circadian health! 🌞

Circadian Disruption: The Silent Epidemic

Your circadian rhythm is your body's master clock, regulating:

✅ Sleep Natural light keeps melatonin in check, helping you wake up and fall asleep properly.

✅ Mood – Disruptions lead to higher rates of depression, anxiety, and stress.

✅ Metabolism – Poor circadian health is linked to obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease.

✅ Brain Function – Disrupted rhythms increase the risk of cognitive decline and dementia.

✅ Longevity – Studies show a 25% higher risk of early death with circadian misalignment.

When you spend too much time indoors, your body never gets the signals it needs.

Put simply: You're Not In Tune!

❌ Artificial light is too dim by day and too bright at night.

❌ You feel tired during the day and wired at night.

❌ Your sleep suffers, your health declines, and your body pays the price.

We Can Fix This.

☀️ Sunlight isn't a luxury; it’s the lifeforce!

☀️ Outdoor access isn't "nice to have"

—Getting Out and Into The Great Outdoors IS necessary for health, well-being, and quality of life, for all ages!!!

☀️ Daily exposure to the Lifeforce, should be a built-in part of care.
